Code of Hammurabi

The most famous of the law codes created in ancient Mesopotamia. The Babylonian king Hammurabi (reigned ca. 1792-1750 b.c.) issued it toward the end of his reign, marking the first time that a ruler of the region had attempted to implement a set of laws affecting all people at all times with an air of impartiality. It is unknown to what degree the Babylonian justice system actually enforced or interpreted these laws, buttheywereheldinhighregardbylater Mesopotamians and were often used as models for later law codes.
